Sandra Grey reports

Park Baptist Church celebrated the launch of the Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre in Great Yarmouth on 30th January 2017

Groups and organisations from across the borough were invited to join the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Malcolm Bird, and his wife, to hear presentations about the work of CAP in the local area and ways in which the team of volunteers at Park Baptist Church are able to help those struggling with their finances and those fighting to manage debts

CAP AMBASSADORS 02 Over 20 organisations were represented at the event which was also attended by Councillor Trevor Wainwright, and a representative from the offices of our MP, Brandon Lewis

Delegates were given an overview of Christians Against Poverty and the work undertaken by the team of volunteers based at Park Baptist Church Following a welcome from the Church Minister, Rev Peter Timothy, presentations by Sandra Grey, Lead Money Coach and Pat Hillier, Debt Centre Manager, offered detail on the CAP money course, a money management course designed to equip delegates with the tools to take control of their finances, and how debt centre volunteers come alongside clients in a friendly and non-judgemental way, to support those struggling with debt

CAP AMBASSADORS 03CAP offers a full debt management service, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and administered by the 250 strong staff team at its head office in Bradford

By visiting people in their own homes, CAP representatives can collate all the necessary papers and submit them to head office.  A budget is then prepared and presented back to the clients via the local Debt Centre Manager, who is qualified to discuss the options presented and help clients choose

During her presentation, Pat Hillier said “Whilst CAP provides practical help for clients to manage their debts and work towards living debt free, above all else, our friendly and non-judgemental approach offers hope to clients, and a release from the darkness and prison of debt”

CAP AMBASSADORS 04 “Our method is proven to work for even the poorest and most marginalised in society, with 94% of clients rating the CAP service as ‘life transforming’ or ‘a great help’ “

Many delegates took information away and CAP representatives will be following up with those who attended and other local organisations throughout the coming few weeks
